Once in a while a special place with a special vision appears. This is…

The Alphington Commons

A new vision to transform Alphington

combining ethical commercial investment with community, ecological and social benefits for all.

A new vision for Alphington

…an evolution of our people and this place…

The Alphington Commons is a collective vision to transform a neglected site in Alphington into a world class public space. It will combine food precincts, for-purpose business and social enterprises, the Bush Kinder capital of Australia, mixed use housing, technologists, and regenerative farming.

The vision is globally iconic and will put Darebin on the world map. It is the first genuine regenerative mixed-use village - a model example that future cities and places can aspire to.

This vision flips the script. It reimagines the site from a place of extraction and degradation (from its history as a quarry and tip) to a place that is restorative and regenerative.

Guiding Principles

The following guiding principles serve as a compass, to frame the future direction with clear shared values and aspirations for placemaking.

  • Every aspect of the Alphington Commons has been deliberately designed to celebrate nature and living things. It is a place of beauty and wonderment that is also resilient, healthy and self-sustaining.

  • This is a place for everyone. We are purposeful in our approach to inclusion - placemaking from a deep understanding of the user needs across generational, cultural and other dimensions of diversity. The Alphington Commons is a ‘third place’ for people, where enduring relationships are formed, and an engaged community keeps it alive.

  • The Commons will be a place of transdisciplinary knowledge exchange. It will be built on the existing thought-leadership and best practice spanning disciplines of education, bush kinder, food, circular economy, regenerative agriculture and technology.

  • The Commons is a thriving place, always buzzing with activity. We foster fun through offerings of food, trade, nature, play, learning and experience.
